When he pulled up in front of the house, Rachel was already waiting outside the front door. To his right, he could see the garage doors were half-open.

Genevieve didn't speak as she unbuckled her seat belt and slipped out of the car. Ethan watched as she walked into the house, her hands lightly rubbing at her upper arms. He hadn't thought he'd grabbed her hard enough to hurt her, but then he remembered the seat belt had been pulled across her upper arms and shoulders.

For a moment he was tempted to follow, to see if he’d hurt her, but then he shook his head. What did it matter if he hurt her, when the only reason she was with him in the first place was so she could get a taste of what she’d put him through?

"Trouble?" Rachel asked as he climbed out of his car.

He glanced at the garage doors. "You tell me."

She looked like she wanted to say something about Genevieve, but evidently, she’d learned from the last time she’d offered up an unwanted opinion.

"A package arrived while you were out..."

"And?" he probed.

"Well, it’s a good thing you told me to leave the packages in the garage from now on. Because once I smelled it, to be honest, I didn't even want to touch it. But someone left it right outside the front door, and I wasn't about to leave it there," Rachel said, her nose wrinkling in disgust as she eyed the garage.

Ethan could already smell it, could already guess what he’d find. His only real surprise was that Genevieve hadn’t. "I'll deal with it. You can go home.”

"Are you sure? I mean, maybe I could..." Rachel started, then stopped when she saw the look on his face.

"What? Go begging to the Council for help because I'm being sent unsavory gifts?" he asked, tone mocking. But when he saw the genuine concern in Rachel’s eyes, his expression softened.

"Look, I know who's responsible, and it'll stop soon. Go home. I'll see you tomorrow night," Ethan said, starting for the garage.

He heard her turn back to the house, likely to grab her bag and coat, as he entered the garage and followed his nose to the smell of decaying flesh and death.

The package was even larger than the one he'd received earlier, and it proved he'd been right to worry about things escalating. Two gifts sent in one day, with one being left outside his home with no sign it'd even been sent via courier. Had it got to the point where Dante was making personal deliveries now? Was he that desperate to scare Genevieve off?

Grimacing at the foul stench emanating from the large foil-wrapped package addressed to Genevieve, he tugged open the red ribbon and removed the lid.

He regarded the bloody remains of the dead creature with silent pity. While he felt no affinity for wolves or shifters, not when they were too territorial for his liking, seeing what Dante had done to this one wasn't a comfortable experience.
